Vegan Mother Sentenced! Say It Ain’t So!

I just read another story about a mother who was given 30 years for starving her children. She blamed it on the children being on a strict vegan diet. Read the story here:

So here I am again wondering when will people get it….It is not the vegan diet that starves a child. It is the parents and their choices!

As parents we have a responsibility to care for our children in the best way possible. It is our duty to make sure our children are clothed, feed, and sheltered. It is our duty to make sure that they receive all the things they need for a healthier life.

After reading this story, I have to go right back to the fact that it was the choices this mother made, not the vegan diet, in caring for her children that caused them to be malnourished. Maybe she assumed more than she studied. Maybe she thought she knew it all.

Whatever the reason it is was her choice.

The reports say that the three-year-old weighed 12 pounds, the nine-year-old weighed 29 pounds, and the 11 year old 36 pounds. Sad to say the least.

But what if we flip the coin.

How many parents would be sentenced if the courts began prosecuting parents of overweight children?

How many parents would be sentenced for their children becoming diabetic due to a poor diet?

How many schools would be fined for feeding children horrible lunches with no nutritional value?

Are you seeing where I am going with this?

It is all about choice and to make a big deal out of this just because the woman practiced a vegan lifestyle is very unfair. Being a vegan does not constitute a poor diet. On the contrary it is a very healthy one if you learn balance and proper choices.

For the record my 15 year old weighs in at 155 lbs and he is 6′ feet tall and my three year old weighs in at 40 lbs and is a little over 3′ft. So my boys are healthy happy vegan children. By the way mom and dad are not doing to bad either. As matter of fact we are on a weight loss journey.

Although those kids were obviously malnourished to be so underweight, you’re absolutely right that it isn’t politically correct to say that parents whose children are grossly obese are abusing them (although they are).

Parents like this might have a syndrome called Munchausin Byproxy (sp?) where they harm their kids to the point of needing medical attention in order to get attention for themselves.
