Thrifty Vegan Thursday

With the type of job my husband has sometimes I feed my family on a budget of $40 to $60 per week. Mind you I have all men in my house, including the cat. So that is a small budget but I make it work. There are months when we are in abundance and those months boy do we enjoy the finer things in vegan cuisine. But for the most part until my income status gets a little better or my husband gets that dream project then this budget is it.

So I have to make it work.

One way I do that with with coupons, bargains, and smart shopping. Yep, vegans can find coupons for their needs as well. I am on a mission to help you find those bargains and learn how to feed your vegan family on a small budget. If you can afford a larger budget why not just save that extra dough, splurge every once in a while, and shop the “Thrifty Vegan”way.

I will post specials that I find, coupons, and even a tip of two for stretching meals and dollars.

Stretch Your Dollar

At the grocery store look for sales on items like spaghetti sauce. If they are three for a dollar get three of even six. Spaghetti sauce can be used for a number of dishes, not just spaghetti, For example some nights I will make a pot of brown rice and add some vegetables, a jar of spaghetti sauce, and seasonings. I add a little nutritional or brewers’ yeast and I have a great dish the whole family enjoys.

Another good way to save at the grocery store is to buy bread on sale. It freezes well so you can buy 4 loaves at 2 for $5.
One Ingredient=Many Meals

Make a big pot of black beans and make bean burritos one night, black bean and corn chili the next night and make the chili stretch to the next evening for chili dogs or chili-cheese nachos.
