Article by Maria Markella

The major source of heart disease is cholesterol circulating in the blood stream. Scientists agree that the levels of cholesterol should stay balanced in order to avoid serious health conditions, like heart attacks or blood pressure problems. If you suffer from heart disease your doctor will prescribe all sorts of chemical medication to reduce cholesterol.

Now scientists have come up to the conclusion that eating vegan foods like vegetables, seeds, nuts and other “Green Foods” may be as effective at reducing cholesterol as medicines. Experiments involving different types of vegan foods proved that a balanced vegan diet with vegetables, soy products, bread, fruits and nuts could be a possible drug-free alternative to reduce cholesterol and protect your body against heart threats.

What is really important when implementing this diet is to combine all sorts of food. Researches proved that a combination of vegan foods can cut cholesterol by up to three times more than when you insist on eating a single vegan food (e.g. only vegetables and soy products).

Here’s the diet I recommend for a typical weekday.

- In the morning consume soy milk, cereals, fruits and nuts. You can also eat some bread with vegan butter and honey.

- For lunch you can have a vegetable soup with lots of bread and fruits for dessert.

- For dinner you can have a fruit salad or a vegetable salad combined with nuts like almonds or walnuts.

A similar diet was adopted by a dozen of people during experiments done by Canadian scientists. The results were amazing. Their cholesterol levels had dropped by almost 30% in just a few months. This combined diet could be as effective as medication according to the researchers.

Even though a lot more experiments and research are needed before the diet could be recommended to people, one thing is certain. There is hope for a natural treatment that doesn’r involve chemicals, for people with heart disease or high cholesterol.

Full pledged vegetarians often have some trouble eating out because there are only a few restaurants that are dedicated only for serving people who prefer to eat no-meat dishes. In London though, vegans have various restaurants to choose from.

A recommended vegetarian restaurant that is one of the most successful in London is Gate, located in the Hammersmith area. It started way back 1989 and gained reputation as time passed by. This is a little more expensive than other vegan restaurants in London but the food selection is sumptuous. The food served is a fusion of Indo-Iraqui Jewish cultures and also takes inspiration from Asian cuisines, such as Thai and Japanese dishes. If you are new to the place, you can ask the staff for suggested dishes based on your preference.

If you want to go to a vegan restaurant which uses meat substitutes that are indistinguishable from the original taste of the meat without the big expense, try the Veggie Inn, situated in Headstone Lane, harrow, London. This is just a small dining place, but the service is great and very welcoming. Try their meat dishes, like the aromatic crispy duck. It tastes even better than other duck meat dishes, and it is not even real duck but a pseudo-meat made of soya protein.

If you are cruising along Marylebone High Street and want to have a vegan meal, check out the Eat and Two Veg restaurant. If offers a tasty selection of veggie burgers and fries. Most of the patrons of the place will suggest getting the schnitzel dish. The price is much more expensive than the food value served, but the place is well polished, very hip, and cosy.

There are a few cafes that can cater to veggie enthusiasts but there is one in Bristol. The Kino cafe is a cooperative owned and operated place which serve mostly vegan food. Price range is also very cheap. You can have a full breakfast which includes chunky toast, baked beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, hash browns and 2 veggie sausages – for only

When I first started trying out the vegan diet, I would only stick to the same foods I was familiar with, without knowing that I was limiting myself to the huge possibilities you can get from experimenting with so many different classes of vegan foods.

Remember that there is a huge spectrum of vegetables, nuts, oils, beans, wheat and fruits that you haven’t tried so always keep an open mind when you are at the market to try new things. Also remember that each vegetable or fruit has its own unique amazing properties, so if you want to get all the nutrients each vegan food offers, you need to try them all.

Here are some of the new discoveries I have made that have change my vegan lifestyle when I put them into my diet.

Lucuma – This fruit is native to the cool highlands of Peru. It has great nutritional values and It was considered by the Incas as the “great fruit” or “Gold of the Incas”. If you are interested in trying out this fruit, luckily for us its becoming more popular and you can find them in Hispanic markets. Now I still haven’t found the actual fruit but I have found the frozen pulp, which makes an awesome smoothie when use with soy milk.

Camu Camu – Another fruit from the amazon rainforest, this fruit is gaining more popularity for having the highest concentration of vitamin C in a fruit. This fruit is actually very famous in Japan for its powerful anti-depressant quality. This fruit is getting more exposure in the markets but right now I have only found this in juice or as a supplement.

Flax Seed Oil – This oil is a must for your diet. Flax seed oil has one of the greatest concentrations of omega 3 essential fatty acids which are a essential for a good health. Try this on your salads to add a unique flavor.

Like these, there are still hundreds of new vegan foods you need to try. Just keep an eye open for new veggies, fruits and nuts next time you go to the market. You will be amazed at how your vegan recipes are going to expand, so you won’t have to eat the same thing over and over.

Article by James Takahara

If you have been a vegan for a long time or know a lot about the vegan lifestyle, then you know the reason why tofu is a must. However, if you are just learning about all the benefits a vegan diet can bring into your life but don’t know where to start or what to eat, you have come to the right place.

By choosing a vegan lifestyle you need to find really good alternatives to protein sources because like many of us, we rely on meat as our main protein source. But don’t worry because there are better and healthier alternatives to meat when dealing with protein, and as an extra bonus, you won’t be getting all the saturated fats and cholesterol meat has.

Why Should you eat tofu?

Below I’m going to give you five reasons why you should include tofu into your diet specially if you are a vegan or even if you don’t follow this lifestyle.

1. Tofu is a great source of protein. By having just 4 ounces of tofu, you are getting 18% of an adult’s daily requirement for protein.

2. By eating tofu, you can also reduce your “bad” cholesterol, also known as LDL, levels by up to 30%. There has been studies that show very low incidence of heart attack in populations that consume tofu on a regularly basis such as Asia.

3. Tofu can provide you with 15% of omega-3 essential fatty acids, normally found only in fish. Omega – 3 is an essential fatty acid which can help you lower blood pressure.

4. Tofu can also be helpful in alleviating the symptoms of menopause.

5. Tofu is a vegan food rich in minerals and antioxidants. Tofu is considered to be an excellent source of iron and copper. Also a good source of antioxidants.

Now if you haven’t try tofu, you will need to experiment with different recipes to find the one you like the most and you will find that this vegan food is very versatile.

Start by educating yourself. The information age has brought with it many advantages which have made this part of the process, by far, the easiest. Not only has the information age given us easy access to several vegan food options, but it has also made accessible, at the click of a mouse, all the health and dietary advice and information that we will ever need to successfully make the transition from a meat to plant-based diet.

Next, is the most crucial step, which takes place internally. Going vegan is something that you have to first do mentally. You have to know within yourself your motivation for doing so. You have to know within yourself whether you intend to make this transition permanent or temporary. If you take your time with this step the next one will be a breeze.

The third step involves taking action, which for many can be the most difficult. At this stage you have to gradually change your diet. For instance, I started this journey as a pesco-vegetarian, then a lacto-ovo vegetarian then vegan. I evolved into this lifestyle. So at this stage the focus is on making the transition gradually and at a pace that is comfortable for you and conducive to your lifestyle. There will be times where this is challenging but with careful meal planning and if needed a vegan transitional coach this step can be seamless.

The final step involves enjoying the benefits of the transition. The best part about being vegan is that you get to enjoy the many benefits of doing so. By going vegan you lower your risk of contracting food born illnesses and cardiovascular disease. You also keep your weight down, have a longer life expectancy, more energy and strong bones. Moreover, if you’re a woman you get the added bonus of easing the symptoms of menopause.

Going vegan means different things to different people. Some do it for health concerns while others do it out of concern for the environment. Some even do it for a short period of time with a targeted goal in mind like weight loss. The most important thing to keep in mind is that you make a point to know why you want to do this and what going vegan will mean to you. It’s a very personal choice that has to be made independently and for your own benefit. So if after giving it careful thought you’re up for a minor challenge, because it’s not difficult, go for it and it will undoubtedly transform your life in ways unimaginable. The lifestyle is easy, but the biggest step is making the choice.

Is honey a vegan food? While many vegans have earnestly shared with me their reasons why they don’t eat honey, beekeepers have also stepped forward to raise their points regarding the beliefs of vegans who will not eat honey. As the debate turns out to be ubiquitous and unresolved, I feel that the answer seems to lie in no more than just holding on to a certain perspective and not so much about judging who is more reasonable or pursuing truths anymore. Following is gist of the arguments. You read, formulate your stance, and decide who has a stronger case. “Honey is not a vegan food.”

“True vegans are against any form of exploitation of animals, including bees. Beekeeping, like dairy farming, can be exploitative. A number of bees are inadvertently killed in the management of beekeeping, which involves forcing bees to construct their combs in trays and undermining their natural ability to overcome parasites, cruel imprisonment of the queen bee to certain parts of the hive, the manipulative split of colonies to increase honey production, use of antibiotics, smoking hives to dull the bees’ senses, and stealing the bees’ honey and feeding them with sugar instead, hence honey is not a vegan food and should be forbidden as an animal product.” “Honey is a vegan food.”

“Just sit and watch the coming in and going out of the bees from their hives, or even open a hive and take a frame out and watch the bees. They are contented because they are cared for and protected! Beekeepers might be seen as stealing honey from the bees, but they give them so much extra food that it doesn’t hurt them. It’s not like the queen bee is confined, the queen can and will take her colony and start a new hive if she so desires, no one can stop her. If the bees are given shelter and choose to stay, let them stay. They love what they do. The relationship between the bees and their beekeeper is mutual and interdependent. Just stop eating honey from abusing beekeepers who don’t respect bees and take all their honey away, but don’t label honey as non-vegan.” Source: http://www.benefits-of-honey.com/vegan-food.html

Defining the reason you are vegan will help you get through the rough times during the transition and help you. It will give you something to reference to, and remind you why you started this in the first place. There are hundreds of reasons why someone would want to become vegan, but the most common are animal rights, personal health and environmental benefit.

Animal rights is the most common reason that people have for becoming vegan. It usually starts by viewing a PETA video or reading one of their many pamphlets about the horrors of factory farms and fur. PETA and other animal rights organizations say that the best way help animals is to remove them from your diet and lifestyle. Being vegan stops around 40-50 animal slaughters a year.

A vegan diet contains minimal cholesterol and is very low in saturated fat compared to the Standard American Diet. Many people have been able to control or eliminate their diabetes by becoming vegan. Consuming a diet that is based around plants is very heart healthy and is an easy way to lose weight naturally. From my own experience, I have lost 60 pounds over the last four years, and have never felt better in my entire life than I do at the moment. The best part of is that I lost the weight naturally and slowly so that it will never come back. There is no “fad diet” bounce back of the pounds to have to deal with.

By not consuming animals, you are reducing the demand for livestock bred for food. A pound of wheat only uses a fraction of the water that it takes to yield a pound of cow flesh. If that wheat is organically grown, it minimally contaminates as well. While a vegan diet does not require food to be organic, one will find that most vegan food is organic or has an organic alternative. These organic alternatives can usually be found at any health food store.

Figure out where you stand with these reasons and scribble down why you are, or want to be, vegan. Spelling it now will help you battle urges and difficulties down the road. Without defining your reason for being vegan, you are navigating your journey without a map. Knowing what makes you tick and what you are passionate about will solidify your reasoning for becoming vegan and allow you to tackle any challenges that may come your way. No one said that this would be easy, but by following the steps outlined here you are greatly increasing your chances of success. Success for you also means success for the animals, your health, and the planet. That may seem like a heavy burden on your shoulders, but if we all work together we can make this planet a little better place to live.

Article by Rebecca Bennett

Finding a simple guide for vegan living can be a complicated matter because there are still not a lot of people that understand or relate to your way of life. This means that finding pure vegetarian or vegan food for your lifestyle can be even more complicated because the world does not revolve around healthy living decisions or great portion sizes. We all know about the fast food restaurants with their burgers that may or may not actually have come from an animal and the unfortunate way in which many fried chicken places treat their chickens. Whether we are making a stand or not, eating healthy is often tricky business. Vegan living does not need to be this way.

Vegan living, instead, should be about choices and finding the right vegetarian and vegan food options for your lifestyle choice. You should be able to live in a world that celebrates and enables all lifestyle decisions and, as long as you aren’t pushing your views on others, you should always have an avenue in which to do this. Remember that as a vegan you have made a choice that you believe to be ethical, however it is not a shared ethical viewpoint and vegan living can represent that in a very realistic way as you look for the right dietary and cooking ideas for your own palette.

Making Sound Recipe And Cooking Decisions

For those that are not familiar, there is actually a difference between a vegan and a vegetarian. For one thing, vegans do not eat or touch any products that were created with an animal’s involvement. Gone are those monkey-created computers that come strangely out of the jungles and gone are any foods or drinks that were created using any animal products. Vegans, as a part of any good vegan living component, always look for another way to experience the product without using an animal’s parts or labour to do so. Making healthy choices based on this can sometimes create small challenges.

Based on this philosophy, cooking and finding recipes often takes a little bit of hunting if you are a vegan living in the world of the carnivore; it can often create complications for meal choices that you may never have experienced before. For this reason, you need to ensure that you stick by your vegan living principles to the fullest and help encourage other vegans to find ways to cook their food and experience some tasty recipe options in the same way. Life should be about enjoyment, regardless of what dietary and lifestyle decisions you have made, and you should be able to find a way to enjoy life within it.

Whether you are new to vegan cooking or you’ve been at it for decades, a new and reliable source of vegan recipies is always welcome. Have you perused all of your cookbooks, checked all of the message boards on your favorite vegan sites, and thumbed through the cards in your recipe box only to come up with nothing exciting? How about creating new vegan recipies of your own?

Vegan recipies are surprisingly simple to make up. If you are cooking a savory dish for a lunch or dinner main dish, the most important things to remember are variety and balance. Try to incorporate all of the vegan food groups into your meal so that you get optimum nutrition from the combination of food that you choose.

Some of the best vegan recipies for lunch and dinner occur on the spur of the moment. If you are making a fresh vegetable sandwich and suddenly feel like putting something unexpected on it like apple slices, go for it! See how the flavors mingle and balance each other out.

Not all vegan recipies have to be about balance, however. A brunch can be an indulgent and decadent experience that you don’t have to feel guilty about. Try putting together your favorite vegan sausage, some fried potatoes, and various leftover vegetables that you have in the fridge. Combine them all in a skillet, then sprinkle with nutritional yeast and other seasonings. Fry until everything is heated throughout, then serve alongside toast smothered in apple butter.

Some vegan recipies are best left to the experienced cooks. Baked goods are something that a lot of vegan cooks won’t do without a recipe because doing so could cause the necessary proportions to be thrown off. If you don’t feel comfortable making up vegan recipies for baked goods on your own, why not try modifying existing vegan recipies? Take a muffin or cookie recipe and change around a few of the ingredients. Instead of chocolate chips, try dried cranberries. Instead of blueberries, try sliced almonds. As long as you keep the proportions of liquids to solids roughly the same, you should be successful. And if your recipe doesn’t do well, at least you will have learned from the experience!

New Sources of Recipes

If making up your own vegan recipies just doesn’t seem like something you want to do, there are new vegan cookbooks coming out every day. There are tons of websites dedicated just to sharing vegan recipies among users. If you look hard enough, you’ll find a new and exciting recipe just waiting to be whipped up in your kitchen.

Article by Scott Thomas

Veganism is a somewhat foreign idea to many Americans. For generations, animal products have been the stuff of Americana: families have started their mornings with scrambled eggs, discussed their days over steak, and enjoyed ice cream desserts before bedtime. At the same time though, our waistlines have ballooned and our arteries have become clogged. Veganism offers a healthy alternative. Try it for awhile, or try it for good. Either way, you’ll reap great benefits: vegans are rewarded with slimmer figures, cleaner-running engines, and enhanced energy.

What is veganism?

The term “veganism” was coined just a few decades ago, and it’s derived from the word “vegetarianism.” Basically, vegetarians do not eat animals, but they will eat animal products such as cheese and eggs. Vegans exclude all animal products from their diets. Veganism involves avoiding milk and eggs as well as honey, gelatin, and animal-based food additives. (A common red food dye, for instance, is made from beetles!)

Is Veganism Difficult?

With animal products being used in everything from tortilla chips to candy coatings, some people imagine it would be difficult to adhere to a vegan diet. Depending on where a person lives, this could be true! The key is to place oneself in healthy environments:

* It’s much easier to find nutritious, tasty vegan food at a health food store than at a traditional chain grocer. Smaller, independent groceries often have vegan and vegetarian hot food bars and refrigerated meals for people on-the-go.

* When you’re choosing a restaurant, remember that certain cuisines are more easily made vegan. For example, it’s easy to adapt recipes to make vegan burritos, pad Thai, sushi rolls, and stir-fry.

* Keep vegan snacks on hand at home, in the office, and in the car. With cashews, fruit salad, and dark chocolate within reach, sticking to a vegan diet can be remarkably easy.

How’s the Food?

Cultures around the world have been making delicious vegan foods for millennia: chocolate, hummus, fried okra, samosas, etc. Whereas traditional American foods tend to rely on animal fats and salt for flavoring, vegan foods make the most of nut oils and heady spices such as cayenne, ginger, garlic, and oregano.

What’s more, modern food companies have excelled at developing meat alternatives. Like bacon? A number of “fake bacon” products are perfectly salty and crispy, and they taste… piggy. Vegans also have delicious dessert options. Vegan apple crumble is divine – especially when topped with a coconut-milk version of ice cream.

People also notice that once they become vegan, they require less stimulation to enjoy flavoring. For instance, they are satisfied with a lower concentration of sugar in their desserts. That’s because their systems have become cleaner over time and are more sensitive to fluctuations.

Is it Safe?

Balanced vegan diets are so safe than in the Netherlands, vegans actually have discounted health insurance fees. Of course, it’s not wise to load up on vegan chocolate chip cookies and forget about nutrition. With the proper medical guidance, you can quickly and safely shed pounds by omitting animal products from your diet. Animals will thank you, and your body will, too!
