I Am Not a Vegan Part 2
You know over the past couple of weeks I have been inundated with comments and emails about a post I did: I Am Not a Vegan.
I must admit a few of them really made me mad. Can I just be honest and say I was a bit pissed? I have learned how to let a lot roll off but sometimes a girl just has to speak up. This is getting a bit ridiculous and so I did more digging and asking around.
From what I have read and asked it seems that there area varying opinions when it comes to what a vegan actually is.
Here are a few of the sites I visited:
http://library.thinkquest.org/20922/text-only/what_is.htm
http://www.americanvegan.org/vegan.htm
http://www.vegan.org/FAQs/index.html
http://www.definevegan.com/
At this point as as always, whether or not someone chooses to call me vegan is really irrelevant. The point is why did I become vegan. Again, I will say it was dietary reasons only. Does that mean in essence I am not a vegan; again an irrelevant point when the term vegan like so many other terms has been slightly twisted over the years, just as the term vegetarian has been. As a matter of fact the term vegan was derived from the word vegetarian. So what does that say about the term vegan.
As far as the honey debate and the fact that I give a blurb about it in my book, Transitioning Your Family With Ease, let me set the record straight. I do not tell anyone to eat honey. What I say is that is it is meant to be eaten by humans and that belief comes from my spiritual convictions and natural health information. I also state that it is my opinion only and in the disclaimer I am sure to let the reader know that the information in the book if for “advice only”. So if stating my opinion and not speaking out against eating honey constitutes a bullet to the brain, then I say just Shoot!
You know that bottom line here is that nothing is ever written in stone, even when it is. In other words, as a result of man’s free will he will think as he wishes and he even say what he wants to; although I have some qualms about the term “freedom of speech” as it give people many excuses to simply spout off at the mouth. Like many things in life it has been misused.
If by visiting this site, listening to my podcast, or reading my newsletters you feel as if I am not a vegan, then that is an opinion. I see what the mission and vision of Vegan Family Living is doing in the lives of many individuals, even those who eat meat. My goal is not to convert but to educate and then assist those who want to become vegan.
Let me end by saying that a fight should always be chosen wisely and I for one, choose not to make this issue my fight when there are way bigger rings to jump into.

LaTara-
I just want to commend you on the way you have handled this whole ‘issue’. Your posts and comments have shown your passion for the topic as well as your integrity. People become so passionate about such things, they become narrow-minded.
Keep up the good work you are doing. Your mission to help those interested in transitioning to a vegan diet is bettering our health and environment.
Kudos to you!

If it eats like a vegan, walks like a vegan, smells like a vegan, it is a vegan. LOL! The whole thing is so silly. Wear the label with pride LaTara!

You are a vegan! People place way too much emphasis on labels. I ran into the same problem. If you’re interested, here’s my reply: http://veganbits.com/compassion-will-cure-more-sins-than-condemnation/
