Transition with Ease to a Vegan Diet

LaTara's Blog

You know over the past couple of weeks I have been inundated with comments and emails about a post I did: I Am Not a Vegan.

I must admit a few of them really made me mad. Can I just be honest and say I was a bit pissed? I have learned how to let a lot roll off but sometimes a girl just has to speak up. This is getting a bit ridiculous and so I did more digging and asking around.

From what I have read and asked it seems that there area varying opinions when it comes to what a vegan actually is.

This past month I had the opportunity to taste some of the most savory all vegan dessert butters from Bella Diva’s Butters and to interview the owner, Lisa Chambers. We put it on toast but soon found out that you can add it to pancakes in addition to muffins, bagels, and other pastries. After interviewing Lisa I also learned that it can be added to vegetables and even fish, for you meat eaters, as a finishing butter.

Ok so I have had a hard time participating in many vegan forums. You see I don’t take kindly to finger pointing and judging and this is what you find a lot of in vegan forums.

Over the weekend I posted to a forum I joined a long time ago. I had hesitated for the very reason I am about to explain.

Here is what I wrote:

“Hello I am LaTara Ham-Ying, a vegan cooking and natural living coach. I have been vegan for 5 years but I have been a cook for over 30 years. I live in IL with my husband who has been vegan for over 20 years and our two boys who are also vegan.

I never thought that 2007 would be such an eye opening year for me. But with 2008 only being 8 days away, I have been reflecting all day today and realized that this has been a year for me.

A year of revelation, realization, and so much more.

When I first started Vegan Family Living I had no idea which way it would go. I started with one idea and it turned into something totally different. My goal was to make this a true vegan family site, but somehow it morphed into a place for transitioning vegans to come and gain some knowledge about simple ways to cook vegan meals.

Every now and then we get tagged on the internet. Guess who was tagged today.

What I am supposed to do is share 7 things about me that you might not know. So here goes:

1. When I was a teenager I was burned by radiator water. I lost a little of my hair and you can still see the mark if you look really close. I was in the tenth grade, very vain with long hair, and I though I was it. Let me tell you an incident like that will wake you up.
