Vegan News and Resources
This Sunday April 22 is Earth Day. That means that you need to be conscious of how you care for the earth. That includes the food we eat as well.
I cannot tell you how angry it makes me when I see restaurants throwing out tons of food rather than taking it down to the homeless shelter. It is also upsetting when I see people fill their plates with food only to eat a couple of bites and toss the rest out. What a waste.
Even the way we store and prepare food can cause harm to earth.
This is where we live, so we need to be careful how we take care of it. There is a responsibility involved.
Here are 10 ways you can be Earth Friendly with food:
1. Eat organic as much as possible. Try to fill you kitchen with organic foods. It is friendlier for earth and better for your body.
2. Plant an earth friendly garden. No pesticides or herbicides allowed.
3. Store your food in earth friendly products like recycled glass and plastic.
4. Cook just enough food for one meal. This way you avoid left overs that may end up spoiling, getting trashed and becoming a part of unnecessary waste.
5. Purchase fresh vegetables as opposed to frozen. This way you avoid throwing out the plastic bag.
6.Purchase your dishes at a thrift store. Recycled means less waste. Even Sheryl Crow eats from recycled dishes.
7. When you eat out if you think you may take food home, share your meal with someone to avoid the doggy bag that will be thrown out anyway.
8. Purchase earth friendly grocery bags and use them when you shop. Trader Joe’s, Wild Oats, Whole Foods, and other stores have bags you can purchase at very reasonable rates. If you can’t buy the bags go paper and skip the plastic.
9. Purchase your food through a health food store co-op program. It is reasonable, organic, and environmentally friendly.
10. Wash your dishes with earth friendly dish washing liquid. Target has an eco-friendly brand called Method and they have a dish washing liquid.
There is always a way to help save the earth. Make some changes today!
